It can be difficult to find store bought gluten-free taco seasoning. McCormick has a gluten-free taco seasoning packet but I can only find it at Winco. I don’t always have a chance to make it to Winco so I came up with my own recipe that I always keep on hand. Those large spice containers from Costco are perfect to re-purpose for my homemade spices.
Home-made taco seasoning:
It’s really pretty when you make it up…before you shake it and mix it. I make up at least a double batch of this to have on hand. It lasts just as long as all the dry ingredients you used. You can adjust the amounts to your taste, this is just a general guideline…
- 2 Tbsp chili powder (I use slightly less for the kids)
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (I use 1/8 tsp for the kids)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 2 tsp paprika
- 6 tsp ground cumin
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 4 tsp black pepper
Store bought taco seasonings, sauces, & shells:
McCormick gluten-free taco seasoning can be hard to find, usually Winco has it. Ortega Taco shells are naturally gluten-free & can be found at most grocery stores.
New Season’s used to carry these gluten-free Simply Organic seasonings and Frontera sauce packets but I haven’t seen them since they re-organized the store.
Gluten-free tortillas:
Corn tortillas are your safest and best tasting options for soft shells, especially if you are feeding non-gluten-free-people. Costco has a great big pack of them for a great price!
There are lots of other options out there for tortillas made with brown rice, ivory teff, sweet potato, cauliflower, spinach etc. Try them out, you might like them, you might not 🙂 New Season’s is a good place to find a wide variety of options. Mission makes a decent gluten-free burrito sized tortilla which you can find at Fred Meyer sometimes.
